Whether you were born and raised in Maryland or you are a happy transplant, Annapolis wedding photography offers plenty of opportunities for you to incorporate your state pride. Start your session at the elegant Maryland State House in the middle of the historic downtown area. In the late 18th century, this building briefly housed the Continental Congress, and it is the very location in which Congressmen ratified the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War. The building’s architecture is beautifully classical, with white columns and a gorgeous stacked dome. Pose for portraits with your entire wedding party beneath the portico, or get some couple shots against the columns.
Next, you and your party can head over two blocks to the Banneker-Douglass Museum, another historically important monument in Annapolis. Wedding photographers can snap candid shots during the walk, since the downtown streets and residences are beautiful in their own right. The museum is an old African American church, and the brick façade displays some stunning, arched stained glass windows. The bride’s white gown will contrast nicely with the brick color, and the setting is perfect for some intimate images of the bridal couple in front of the building. The doors, a delightful cornflower color, can be your wedding album’s “something blue.”
Your last stop, Charles Carroll House, is down near the water, so jump in your limousine for a ride. This opulent brick building was home to Charles Carroll, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and it overlooks the waterfront with a pristine formal garden in which you and your bridal party can take pictures. The Charles Carroll House charges $150 for a photo session on their grounds, but the price is worth it to use the spectacular views, verdant garden, and deep brick walls as your backdrops. Incorporate the waterfront in some fun shots of your bridal party and take some staged couple pictures as you and your future-spouse stroll across the grounds. After the shoot, you can relax and enjoy the rest of your day—knowing that you will have a treasure trove of pictures to look back on with pride!
Annapolis is home to two prestigious colleges, and both campuses have the far-reaching history and perfectly manicured grounds that will make an excellent setting for your Annapolis wedding photography session. Beginning with the tree-lined paths of St. John’s College, take time to indulge in your surroundings as your photographer snaps away. Have your bridesmaids and groomsmen line up on either side of the Liberty Bell replica while the bridal couple stands in the center by the bell, or head over to the wide green expanse in front of the white columned, collegiate-looking Barr-Buchanan Center for some panoramic bridal couple shots.
The campus is full of gorgeous brick architectural backgrounds, so choose a building and get creative with your shots. The late 19th century Chase-Stone House was modeled after a Florentine palace, so it is fantastic for stylish bridal couple portraits, and Randall Hall has the brick and white plaster classical design that makes for great group shots. The Carroll-Barrister House is lovely in itself, but the building’s garden—think stone benches and a shaded brick path through lush vegetation—is the true gem. The Plaza, overlooking College Creek, offers another great background, and you and your wedding party will have no trouble crafting great portraits in the Mellon Garden, which is home to striking ancient magnolias and colorful blossoms.
Once you have exhausted the photographic opportunities at St. John’s College, make your way over to the United States Naval Academy to complete your Annapolis wedding photography album. This school’s campus rivals St. John’s in beauty, with sprawling green lawns and beautiful architecture. The Naval Academy Chapel is perhaps the most popular building on campus, with a high dome that is visible throughout the compact city. Have your wedding photographer get some couple shots in front of the chapel, then walk around the rest of the campus to find other great compositions. Bancroft Hall has the classical stone face of a traditional government building, providing a wonderful backdrop for your group shots. Once you have completed your photographic tour of both campuses, you will be left with stunning portraits that you will look forward to showing off!
Annapolis is not just known for its beautiful historic downtown and gorgeous college campuses, the surrounding water plays a large part in the city’s culture. For Annapolis wedding photography with panoramic cerulean backdrops or colorful shoreline row houses, rent a sailboat from one of the many boat rental outfits. South River Boat Rentals, in particular, offers sailboats and speedboats that customers can rent for ½ a day to a week. Climb aboard your boat with your wedding photographer and your wedding party to get some fantastic shots out on the water. Have fun creating lasting memories with your friends and family while your photographer snags beautiful portraits to fill all of those frames on your wedding registry!
