Janelle: We actually were set up by my mother in 2003. She worked with Jason and had told me that there was a really attractive guy and she thought that I would like him. At first I was very hesitant to give him my number because I know how most set-ups go, but, eventually, I did. We talked on the phone for a couple of weeks, just getting to know each other, and then we went out on our first blind date. My first impression of Jason was that he was a huge talker: he told me whole life story on that first date, which I found kind of bizarre. Nonetheless, there was definitely a spark, and we began seeing more of each other.
Jason: I first noticed Janelle’s bushy eyebrows and bifocals....no just kidding! I thought that she was really attractive. We started off as friends and it quickly grew into much more.
Jason: We were together for 2 years. I proposed to her on Christmas. I was very nervous and I just thought “I need to get up the courage get this over with!” We were in the living room, and I asked Janelle to take a seat. So, she sat down in the chair and I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me!
Janelle: I knew something was going on a few weeks prior to this when I took a weekend trip to Chicago. We spoke on the phone and some of the things he said made me wonder what was going on. He was very fidgety and nervous the night he proposed. When he said he needed to tell me something and to sit down I just started hysterically laughing because I started to figure out what was about to happen. When Jason proposed I immediately yelled out ”yes!!” Really though, I was surprised by the proposal because we had talked about marriage briefly but never had an in-depth conversation about it. So it came as a shock….but a very, very good shock.
I had no idea how to start planning the wedding, but I had a great support team of people who helped me: my mother, my sister and my best friend. They helped me especially with picking my dress….which I loved! Jason was really helpful through the whole process. He helped find the wedding venue, and helped pick out the catering menu and the music.
Janelle: We got married in Brooklyn, at St Ignatius Roman Catholic Church which was very special to me because it was the church that I grew up attending. As I was about to walk down the aisle with both of my parents I was one big ball of emotions, and as soon as the door opened and I saw Jason I started to cry.
Jason: On the day of the wedding there were all sorts of emotions running through me. As soon as the doors opened and I saw Janelle for the first time I also just started crying.
Janelle: My favorite part of my wedding was…well…everything! It was such a memorable day, and it was just wonderful to see all out hard work come together. At the reception we had all the traditional things like the bouquet and garter toss. Jason also had a few surprises planned that I didn’t know about: first he surprised me by serenading me with a song he wrote for me, and then, when it was time to take off the garter, he changed into a boxer’s costume – complete with robe, gloves and helmet! It was so hilarious!
Jason: I just loved the atmosphere of the whole day, and it was wonderful having both of our families there to share it with us.
Janelle: After the wedding we headed to St. Thomas for our honeymoon. It was perfect - it gave us time to just relax together after the chaotic last two months before the wedding.
Jason: Being newlyweds has been awesome! I’m just so happy to come home and see her everyday!
