If you’re looking for a natural respite from the DC concrete jungle, Theodore Roosevelt Island may be the perfect place for your Washington DC engagement photography session. Just north of the Roosevelt Bridge on George Washington Memorial Parkway, the island is lush with vegetation and it has trails that, despite how crowded the island may get, can still make you feel secluded.
Start your session off with some shots on the pedestrian bridge over the Potomac River. Many people say that one of the indicators of a great marriage is being able to sit quietly with your spouse, not needing to fill the silence with words. Gaze off over the river side-by-side and have your photographer capture a casual, comfortable moment between you and your sweetie. The island itself is a treasure trove of varied landscapes and picturesque views. First you can head to the middle of the island to snap shots around the memorial for Theodore Roosevelt, and then follow up with some pretty pictures of the two of you relaxing on one of the stone benches or kissing in front of the fountain. Next, get creative with your photographer. Take the trails around the island and discover beautiful marshlands, bridges, boardwalks, and views of Washington DC. Engagement photography is often far more casual than wedding photography, so feel free to let your photographer snap a lot of candid shots. You’ll be glad you did.
Start your Washington DC engagement photography shoot off with a touch of whimsy. Visit the Duke Ellington School of the Art’s Giant Adirondack Chair at 35th Street and Reservoir Road. This towering green chair is an entertaining spot for even the tallest couple to feel like a kid again. Climb up onto the novelty chair and have your photographer take some fun pictures of the incredible shrinking couple! From there, walk--or catch a ride--over three streets to the Tudor Place Historic House and Garden. It will cost you $200 for outdoor photography or $300 for indoor photography, but the prices are justified by the stunning, elaborate gardens and the glamorous chandelier-clad interior. If you choose to take your shoot out into the garden, be prepared for a wealth of perfectly landscaped flower beds and boxwood hedges. Stroll leisurely with your darling through the Japanese Tea House and across the bowling green while your photographer snaps beautiful shots of you walking hand-in-hand. On the inside, the Tudor Place House is brimming with crystal, silver, and intricate plaster work. Dress to the nines and get some glamorous shots against the lavish backdrop. From Tudor Place, head north up 32nd Street a couple blocks to get to your last stop, Dumbarton Oaks Gardens. Although wedding photography is prohibited, you can still take advantage of these gorgeous grounds in your Washington DC engagement photography session for only $8 per person in admission fees. For this location, have your photographer leave behind the bulky tripods and just snap some pretty candid shots of you and your beau frolicking in the gardens and rediscovering the reasons why you wanted to marry one another. Lying in the cool grass or strolling through the tree lined Plum Walk, you will not only get fantastic pictures but you’ll feel like you just had a romantic day trip as well!
Inject style into your engagement photo album by choosing two of the city’s unique icons in your Washington DC engagement photography session. Start off at the Lincoln Theater on U Street and 13th. Music lovers will be in awe of this location as this theater once housed the acts of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Cab Calloway. The outside of the theater, with its brick façade, interesting overhang and marquee, will give your photos a strong sense of history revived. If you or your future-spouse play any instruments, you can tote them along to play in front of the theater while your photographer catches some entertaining shots for posterity. Right next door sits another Washington DC favorite—Ben’s Chili Bowl. This restaurant is a beloved institution for DC area residents and tourists alike. Get some shots of you and your honey outside of the establishment, then pop inside and order a couple of their famous half smokes. Your photographer can capture the good, the bad, and the messy as you chow down on your dogs together. Couples with a sense of humor will have a fun day shooting at these two locations.
